A myringotomy is a surgical procedure that creates a small incision in the eardrum (tympanic membrane). This incision allows trapped fluid in the middle ear to drain, relieving pressure and discomfort. 

Reasons for Myringotomy:

• Drain fluid: The primary reason for a myringotomy is to drain fluid buildup in the middle ear, a condition known as otitis media with effusion (OME). This fluid can cause hearing loss, earache, and pressure sensation.
• Treat ear infections: In some cases, myringotomy is performed to drain pus from an ear infection that isn’t responding to antibiotics.
• Sample fluid: The procedure can also be used to collect a sample of middle ear fluid for laboratory analysis to identify bacteria or other causes of infection.
• Insert ear tubes: Often, a myringotomy is combined with the placement of tympanostomy tubes. These tiny tubes are inserted through the incision to keep the middle ear aerated and prevent fluid from reaccumulating.
